Is this going to be the new standard for distributing your films?

Surprising news hit Hollywood this week with Clerks director Kevin Smith announcing that he will forgo the normal bidding war for this latest film, Red. Instead, we will be dissing the 'old' way of distribution - selling it to a major studio and will be taking it on a pre-release 13 city road-show tour.

One question that they bring up is "as storytellers, why not instead use our creative abilities that resulted in a film in the first place to also creatively SELL that film directly to our public?"

So, it looks like Silent Bob will be not only be buying advertising for his film including billboards,print media and TV commercials, but he will also be renting out theaters across the country to exhibit his film before a full release. I'm also assuming that he will be in full control of the merchandising at the premieres.

Btw - my favorite quote from Kevin Smith on the matter: "Don't hate the studio; BECOME the studio. Anybody can make a movie; what we aim to prove is anyone can release a movie as well."
