Not able to get FCP to import your DSLR footage correctly?

For those of you that have bought the Canon 5D or 7D, then you may have realized that it's impossible to log and transfer the footage in Final Cut Pro without downloading the plug-in. If that is the case, then go to the link below to download the necessary plug-in.

What's in the box??!!

Don't worry, this isn't a clip of the extremely over-dramatic Brad Pitt in the ending of Seven.
This is a film that was produced and shot in 2009 and has taken youtube by storm.
With post production taking over 2 years, watch as this film takes you through a small adventure.

To see what the director Tim Smit had to say about the film, check the clip below:

Robin Sparkles Returns!

Just read an article on how Robin Sparkles is returning to How I Met Your Mother. If you don't know who Robin Sparkles is, she's a Canadian teen pop singer character Robin Scherbatsky played when she was a teen.

The following are the full-length music videos they shot for HIMYM. Anyone who's seen a music video from the 1980s should find at least some humor in these. Plus, keep an eye open for Alan Thicke!

If you're not impressed by Final Cut Pro's slow motion capabilities, and Cinema Tools doesn't do the job, then we suggest you take a look in the direction of a plug-in called Twixtor. The making of MGMT's "Congratulations" video

Here is an excerpt from an interview that Film & Video Magazine did w/ Editor Steve Gandolfi:

Film & Video: Do you have a long history with director Tom Kuntz?
We’ve worked together on many projects including an Altoids campaign, X Box “Lips,” Cadbury “Eyebrows,” and recently on a series of spots for Geico. He’s an absolute genius.

Steve Gandolfi: What was your collaborative process like on this project specifically?
Whenever you work with Tom you know it is going to be amazing and a true challenge because he has exacting standards and a clear creative vision. I love working with him for all of these reasons. He inspires me to push to the absolute limit. This film is like looking at an Andres Serrano or Jackson Pollock: polarizing, ambiguous, haunting and beautiful. It shows Tom’s painterly approach to film and has sparked a myriad of interpretations on the part of the fans. Check out the comments on YouTube – amazing.

How would you describe the mood you were looking for? And how does that affect your editorial choices?
I love the track and probably listened to it 1,000 times and it never got old. Tom wanted the mood to be moving and thoughtful, with time for the narrative to unfold. The edit followed suit.

Any unique challenges on this one, from either a creative or technical standpoint?
Everything – each shot, frame, movement, is all choreographed in time with the music. Every edit made worked within this very strict visual orchestration. Tom also carefully considered every way in which the clip might be viewed – including on the iPhone – so we experimented with framing and tech specs so that it would be received well in any situation.

How do you deal with the pressure when you're facing tight deadlines? The band and the label were very enthusiastic about the project and in recognizing it was something special they provided a longer timeline than usual. As far as working under a tight deadline, having worked largely in short form it’s all I’ve really ever known, so the stress isn’t a real issue. But it was a welcome change to have more than the usual three-day turnaround on this one.

Check out the article here.

Artist Fellowship Awards

NOTIFICATION: The Wisconsin Arts Board FY11 Artist Fellowship Awards eGRANT application form is now open. Please go to http://artsboard.wisconsin.gov and click on “Grant Programs” to locate the program. The Artist Fellowship Awards page is your information center for this program. When you are ready to login to the eGRANT system, click on the eGRANT link found on the Artist Fellowship page. Before working on the application, be sure to review the guidelines. Note that the applicant to this particular grant program must be AN Individual ARTIST, not an organization.

Here are some common eGRANT application mistakes to avoid:

- Data entered in all upper or lower case: Some applicants enter their name and address info, as well as other data, in all upper or lower case. Please don’t do this. Capitalize the first letter of your name as you would in a normal sentence.

- Waiting too long to begin the process: START EARLY! Help calls increase dramatically as the due date approaches. We are a small agency and may not be able to assist you with problems if you wait until the due date to begin your application.

Note that the deadline IS 3PM on the due date. However, when you log in, the deadline time will appear as 3:59:59 PM because the eGRANT servers are located in the Eastern Time zone. The submission time is 3PM so staff can be in the office to assist applicants working up to the deadline.

These communications are sent via e-mail only. It is vital that we have your current e-mail address at all times. It is your responsibility to keep the Arts Board informed of changes in your e-mail address. We will not be able to inform you of future grant opportunities without this information.

If you have technical questions regarding eGRANT, please contact Dale Johnson via email or phone: dale.johnson@wisconsin.gov or 608/261-8217.

Color Correcting

How many VMG students apply color correction to their video assignments?

When I was introduced to the color correction tools we have available to us I was in awe! The video takes on a completely new dimension of depth and crispness that is unachievable from raw camera footage (unless painstakingly adjusted in-camera).

I strongly suggest VMG students get comfortable with the color correction tools we have available to us! Once you experience the difference color correction can make, this step will surely become part of your workflow!

Just a few tools available:

Final Cut - 3-way Color Correction Filter (from effects tab) Easy & Very Effective!

After Effects - Color Correction from effects menu

Color - A program which comes with the Final Cut Suite that is specifically for color correction!

The Color program is available in the video suites (111) and is an amazing tool that will bring you closer to professional looking video! I suggest you check it out!

Madison Game Students Hit the Road

Madison Media Intitute's departmetn of Game Art and Animation recently agreed to supply interns to Roadview of Madison in partnership with Mandli Communications. Students will create 3D models to support Roadview's Lidar equipepped vehicles data collection service.

The Lidar system has been integrated in specially outfitted vehicles which can scan entire highways including structures such as bridges while traveling at highway speeds. The system returns hundreds of millions of points scanned by the Lidar equipment and generate complex point clouds of data. This data will then be analyzed and simplified before being turned over to the 3D team. This team with the help of the Madison Media Game Art and Animation intern's will convert this raw point cloud data into 3D models of the road surface, bridges and other structures needed as well as texture the 3D surfaces with photos taken during the scanning process.

This technology is also being used to scan entire cities and can be used for many different applications. Both the students at MMI and the 3D team at Roadview are excited about the potential of this synergy. The demand for this new technology is skyrocketing and is expected to show exceptional growth in the next 10 years.

Madison Media Institute: Established in 1969, specializes in media career training through hands-on work with cutting-edge equipment. Specific areas of curriculum include Digital Media Design & Production, Recording & Music Technology, Video & Motion Graphics, Media Systems Technology, Game Art & Animation and Entertainment & Media Business. Programs and facilities are continually upgraded to coincide with developments made in technology and communications.

Making of AT-AT video

A few weeks ago (June 28th) I posted a video of an animated AT-AT from the Empire Strikes Back. Here is the making of that inspirational movie.

Redesigning something that works

If you've ever worked on a video, logo, jingle, or design for a client, this video may hit a little too close to home. If you find yourself working on a project for someone, revisions just become a part of life. Sometimes, it just gets a little out of control. If you haven't, well then take notes on what 'not' to do.

EXT. MADISON IN AUTUMN - NIGHT

Here is a video that was shot and edited by Nathan Clarke, owner of Fourth Line Films.
He recently held a workshop in Madison on the new trend of shooting HD video with DSLR cameras. When asked about this project, he said "I went out at night twice (I wish it was a little more windy when I went.) The first time, I focused on trees, but I found after a while that traffic could get some cool results. So the second time, I did some tree shots, but also tried to set up some interesting street scenes." Enjoy.

Missing Pages; a movie reminiscent of La Jetée

Inspired from the 1962 French short film La Jetée, writer/director Jerome Olivier has created a hauntingly innovative approach to narrative filmmaking.

It is the “story-telling”, not just the story, that makes Missing Pages distinct. The entire film, which runs 24 minutes, has been shot using a digital still camera. The images were then composited in three-dimensional layers, and virtual cameras were used to move through them, with many, many stylish techniques — a process the filmmakers dub “fotomation”.

Enjoy.

banksy art work samples

Street art disaster at its best

One word can often represent the most simple and beautiful of a design media. In the media that is graffiti art, that word is Banksy. The art prankster of the world has dazzled us, marking his territory in some of the largest cities. With his distinctive stenciling technique, as well as his political art stunts, he IS the face, or at least the voice of the underground graffiti world. Check out the trailer for his new film that is being called "the world's first street art disaster movie."
